Hi there fae's.
I am taking the lead this year on the radical faerie village at SF pride this year. Once again, we hope to transform an urban space during one of the most crowded events in this major city, into a space of magic and fae.
And I'd love your feedback on what you want to see from the faerie village, and what you hope it to be. As well, always looking for performers and participants, especially those who do alternative (ie. not just another techno dj) entertainment that faeries love. Magic work, drumming, acoustic music, and so on. Interested in using the energy of the crowd as part of a ceremony? (just remember organizing a crowd like that during an event like pride is alot like herding cats).
A little feedback on Faerie Freedom Village (aka Radical Faerie Village). The FFV is a commercial free zone in the middle of SF's gay pride. It's been going on for a few years, originally created by Timothy Buttercup, who has left us for the East Coast, and then Blue, who has left us for other realms of existance. Since it's begining, it has doubled in space, and is one of the few spaces at SF pride that has both grass and shade.
Anyways, just thinking ahead. I am cross posting this to some of the other faerie lists on tribe.net, but will be monitoring all the threads.
- NeonBunny (aka Aaron)
(and ps, don't mind the bunny icon, also in the works for a bunny party during easter)

Re: Planning ahead for Radical Faerie Village at San Francisco's Gay Pride, 2007!
Thu, February 1, 2007 - 11:05 AMI thought I'd go ahead and post the points I hope to establish this year with FFV, so people can comment on them.
Goals for FFV07:
• Eliminate the large stage. Instead, have 2 smaller stages. One end will have chill out electronica (no hard thumpy techno), and the other will be set up for accoustic/live/spoken word stuff. Sound systems will be minimized, hopefully bringing the music and the performers not only closer to the people, but keeping the sound level to a tolerable level.
• Move these stages to a different postion. If you are very familiar with that lot, you will remember that when you come in to FFV, you turn left or right. Previously, the stage was set up when you turn to the right, all the way at the end, facing in. Instead of being at the end, I want to put it about halfway down, on the right, facing north, with the back to the vendors. The chill out music will be set up in an area that mirrors this. I think this is a better position for a lower sound level stage, and as well, when people peek in through the fence or into the area, they won't see a huge stage that draws them in and makes the space crowded.
• Re-configure the fencing layout. I would like to have the south entrance be open. Last year, it was open, but then there were fences/openings to the right and to the left. The right one opened to the big stage, the left one (with the notorios sign) opened to the chill space.
• Remove the ugly green privacy fencing. Ok, keep it on the south fence that borders with the vendors, but take it off the sides. C'mon, we're gay, we're fae, and we can decorate that fence to it looks fabulous both inside and out. Right now, between the small enclosures and the ugly fencing, the whole area feels like a cage. It's Faerie Freedom Village, not the Faerie Cage and Zoo. We can make it feel more free.
• For entertainment, I'd love to see more alternative things happening. One stage will be for electronic dj (cd only) chill music. The other will be for accoustic. Live bands, accoustic guitar, banjo, fiddle, bagpipes? In between bands, I'd love to fill it with spoken word, stand up comedy, maybe a little drag, pantomime, live theater, poetry readings. Anyone want to do an audience interactive performance in the space (coordinate so we can plan it between music for maximum impact!) How about some Reiki using the vibe of the crowd (just remember that focalizing a huge crowd at pride can be like hearding cats!)
• Visual artists. Welcome to bring up your work, paintings (great for the fence), sculptures, photograhy, whatever and show it off!
Anyone who's interested in performing, dj'ing, playing music, etc... Email me. For bands and dj's, I'd like to hear samples so we know what to expect and how to best place you!

Comfort & Joy can lend fabric for alternative fence covers
Tue, February 6, 2007 - 2:36 PMif that's what you were getting at.... something better than that green mesh.
Also, we're hoping to do another Afterglow on Pink Saturday... if that influences your planning at all....
hugs,
:) Kitten -

Thu, February 8, 2007 - 3:32 PMYes. Green mesh ugly. I grew up an army brat, and green reminds me to much of thier horrible aesthetic. -

Re: Comfort & Joy can lend fabric for alternative fence covers
Fri, February 9, 2007 - 10:25 AMpersonally, i find the green mesh to be "cooling". and it blocks the wind. my suggestion is to have Pride install the green stuff as usual, and then cover/add your own decorations over that. (that way, in case the extra coverings don't materialize as planned, or if there are gaps, we're covered.) -

Re: Comfort & Joy can lend fabric for alternative fence covers
Fri, February 9, 2007 - 1:51 PMThe problem with the green mesh, is that if we decorate it, it's only decorated on one side.
What if we leave it up between FFV and the vendors, but don't put it on the ends. Then we focus on decorating those two ends (the stage is going to be much smaller this year, so it won't be behind that). That way, people inside the pride celebration, and people out by the fountains, will see the art wall we've created...
Plus, decorating this 50' area is probably much easier than decorating the 400' area. -

Re: Comfort & Joy can lend fabric for alternative fence covers
Tue, April 24, 2007 - 9:45 AMbtw,
After talking with Joe at the SF Pride board, we've decided to let them put up the shade material. This because this year, there will be vendors outside the fences on all 3 sides of FFV.
So what we're going to do this year, is to set up a path between the building and FFV. This fence will also be covered with shade cloth. The path will go the entire length of FFV. There will also not be seperate fences for each side of FFV. So we'll essentially be taking what has been two areas before, and creating one large area. The entrance will still be in the center, where the concrete is, but will be a narrower entrance.
We're hoping all this will send the message that FFV is not a shortcut from market street to the main stage at city hall (although the path we are creating on the north side is).
We also plan on setting up some tables and chairs in the concrete area, to create a cafe-like atmosphere. But we have been told that we can not serve food or drink. But of course, we can't be responsible if someone comes and sets up a nice spread of yummy vegan food without our knowledge!
